The Rules of Fidelity
By Scott Harrup | July 2, 2008
“ ‘What it means to be faithful’ blurred in modern world,” USA Today’s June 30 headline announced. Sharon Jayson’s article on the rocky state of modern marriage is thought provoking and worth a read. She examines the fuzzy definitions attributed to “infidelity,” and asks the reader to consider just how far a marriage partner must go before he or she has truly cheated on a spouse.
I read Jayson’s article and asked myself two questions about my own marriage, questions firmly rooted in my commitment to a biblical worldview.
1: If I were to commit an infidelity, whose rules would I be breaking anyway? Forget society’s iffy rules. God established marriage. Jodie and I exchanged our vows in a sacred ceremony, and we base our commitment on our shared faith even more than we do on the laws of Indiana, where we married.
2: Just how far would I have to go to commit an infidelity? Not far at all. Jesus explained that our inner motivations are at the root of all our moral decisions. An inappropriate sexual relationship actually begins in my mind. If I even look at another woman with the desire to commit adultery with her, I’ve sinned (Matthew 5:28).
On the surface, those two realities would appear to create impossible rules for fidelity. But that’s where the other part of a biblical approach to living comes in.
To be morally upright in God’s sight requires His grace at work in me, whether the subject is marriage or treating others with love or even the mundane things in life.
God established marriage at Creation, He has blessed countless couples with a lifelong commitment through the ages, and I know I can trust Him to guide Jodie and me. This Saturday marks 22 years of such guidance. I pray there are many more years to come.
